The TLIC3005 Drive heavy combination vehicle is the latest nationally accredited unit involving the skills and knowledge required to drive a heavy combination vehicle safely. It includes maintaining a systematic and efficient control of all vehicle functions, monitoring traffic and road conditions, managing vehicle condition and performance, coupling and uncoupling a trailer, and effectively managing hazardous situations. This unit is perfect for learners who are:
- Drivers and driving instructors aged 21 or older with a valid Class C licence held for at least three years and an MR or HR licence for at least one year, aiming to upgrade their licensing to Heavy Combination (HC) in alignment with WA licensing requirements.
- Operators based in WA preparing to handle prime movers with attached single semi-trailers or HR class vehicles towing trailers exceeding 9,000 kg Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM).
- Professionals in the transport and logistics sectors who need formal training and licensing credentials to comply with state regulations, enhance their driving qualifications, and expand career opportunities within WA’s transport industry.
- Learners needing comprehensive training that includes theoretical and practical assessment aligned with the Department of Transport WA’s standards for Heavy Combination vehicle operation.
How is the course delivered?
Training is delivered via Blended delivery (online distance + face to face).
Course Duration: This course is designed to be completed up to 1-3 days (including pre-course learning). Duration will depend on previous experience:
Expected Study Hours: Typical learners are expected to spend approximately 08- 19.5 hours depending on existing knowledge, skills, and experience.

What will you learn?
This course is designed to develop your expertise in transport and logistics. Among others, you will learn to:
- drive heavy combination vehicle
- monitor traffic and road conditions
- monitor and maintain vehicle performance
How is the course structured?
All learners will be assessed through:
- Documentation (e.g. Hazard Report, Faulty Equipment Report, Vehicle Records, etc.)
- Practical skills demonstration assessments
- Questioning – written or verbal
What are the entry requirements?
Students must:
- Be 21 years of age and over
- Have basic computer skills
- Have sound Language, Literacy, and Numeracy skills*
- Undergo eye test (Better eye at least 6/9, worse eye at least 6/18)
- Have good general health and fitness for practicals
- Have the following:
- A valid Class C licence for at least 3 years, and
- A valid MR/HR licence for at least 1 year.
*Learners who do not meet the LLN requirements may still enrol into the course provided the enrolment has been endorsed by the trainer and corresponding additional support strategies have been put in place.
In WA, an application of an HC vehicle licence requires the candidates to:
- hold the following (non-provisional):
- A car (C class) licence for at least 3 years, and
- An MR class or HR class licence for at least 1 year
- Complete Form E114 – PDA Customer Eligibility Form
- Undertake an eyesight test prior to training activities – if applicable, wear visual aids such as eyeglasses or contact lenses (may be done in the training facility)
- Declare they are medically fit to drive
- Pass a theory test and the Practical Driving Assessment in an HC vehicle**
** Learners who do not meet the LLN requirements of the course may still enrol into the course provided the enrolment has been endorsed by the trainer and corresponding additional support strategies have been put in place.
What are the resources needed to complete the course?
To support you in your new course with Sample RTO, we will provide the following:
- Reading Materials and Assessment Workbook
- Computers
- Heavy combination vehicle
- Others:
- A range of relevant exercises, case studies, and/or simulations
- Relevant materials, tools, equipment and PPE currently used in the industry
- Applicable documentation, including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.
To complete your course, you will need ongoing access to the following:
- Computer/laptop with relevant software such as, but not limited to, the following:
- Internet access preferably through Google Chrome
- MS Word and Powerpoint
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
What are the course fees?
The TLIC3005 Drive heavy combination vehicle course fees may vary depending on the type of vehicle:
Heavy combination vehicle A = $2,400.00
- Initial deposit of $1,200.00 upon enrolment
- Then $1,200 to be paid before certificate issuance
